December1st 1998 Volume 1: Issue 2 The case of the jealous face-slasher Concepcion et al v. City of New York et al; Supreme Court, Bronx County; October 1998 Accompanied by two friends, a 16-year-old girl goes to the hospital to visit her cousin, who has just given birth. Visiting hours have ended, and a nurse tells the teen-agers to wait by the elevators in the maternity ward. After the nurse leaves, a woman exits an elevator and threatens the girl. The woman has threatened the girl before because she believes the father of her unborn child has impregnated the girl's sister. The girl reports the incident to the nurse when she returns with the new mother and baby, and the nurse leaves to seek help from hospital security. The woman returns and slashes the girl's face, and the girl requires about 100 stitches. She files suit, alleging that the nurse voluntarily came to her aid but failed to fulfill a duty of reasonable care, thereby exposing her to harm. The girl is awarded damages and the city, maintaining that the new mother and baby were never brought to the elevator area and the girl never reported the threat to the nurse, announces it will file post-trial motions.
